Vihaslahti Birdwatching Tower and Nature Reserve
Vihaslahti Bay is located right next to the Hiekkasärkät resort area and is part of the Vihas–Keihäslahti Nature Reserve. You can easily reach Vihaslahti by walking along the boardwalk and embankment trail – the distance from the Marine Nature Center is about 4 km one way. The area features a birdwatching tower, a fireplace, a dry toilet, and an information shelter, making it a perfect destination for the whole family.
A Paradise for Bird Migration Watching
The coast of Kalajoki is known among bird enthusiasts as one of the best bird migration sites in Northern Finland. The straight and island-free shoreline guides migrating birds close to the coast, making the migration unusually concentrated in the Kalajoki and Pyhäjoki area. In the right weather conditions, huge flocks of birds gather along the shoreline – an unforgettable sight for both experts and beginners.
Diverse Birdlife Throughout the Year
In spring and autumn, you can observe the migration of geese, swans, cranes, and birds of prey from the Vihaslahti tower. The area also hosts a wide range of breeding species, such as gulls, terns, and waders. The wetlands and coastal meadows of Vihaslahti offer important resting and feeding grounds for birds.
A Trip into Kalajoki’s Nature
In addition to birdwatching, the Kalajoki area offers peace and relaxation by the sea and in nature. The boardwalks and trails make exploring easy, and the rest areas are ideal for enjoying a picnic surrounded by seaside views and forest scenery.
