Elevating sustainability for tourism companies in the Oulu region – A responsive travel destination in the new market situation
Elevating sustainability for tourism companies in the Oulu region is project, which will focus sustainable tourism and digitality. Tourism has been one of the biggest sufferers of the corona effect and the recovery of the industry will be challenging. Cash flow has nearly stopped or cash registers are empty and the only way to respond to the upcoming opening and demand for tourism is through regional cooperation and action targeted at the needs of SMEs. When toursim is allowed after corona restrictions, competition in all markets will be very fierce and support must be found for tourism in the Oulu region. This project has been prepared for the response of tourism in the Oulu region to accelerate the rapid recovery and to the development of operations and competitiveness in the opening market situation.
The project’s work packages support the recovery and competitiveness of SMEs in the tourism, restaurant and event sectors in the Oulu region affected by the corona pandemic:
- Rising demand (short-distance tourism, sustainable tourism) offers growth potential for tourism companies in the Oulu region. The development of tourism content and new marketing measures corresponding to the change in consumer behavior will enable tourism companies to gain access to new customer structures, market structures and distribution structures.
- Implementation of tourism content and marketing that meet the recovering demand. The market revolution caused by corona has changed operating models and requires the reform of previous commercially profitable production and the reform of marketing and sales promotion operating models to meet the visibility and distribution channel requirements in tourism.
This project is valid on 1.7.2021-30.6.2023 and total budget is 964 771 euros, funded by European Regional Development Fund, Council of Oulu region, Humanpolis Ltd, Rokua UNESCO Global Geopark, Kalajoki Tourism Association, City of Oulu, Business Oulu and Travel Marketing Oulu Ltd.
