Kalajoki and its famous holiday area of Hiekkasärkät is located in Northern Ostrobothnia on the seashore and by national road 8. You can get to Kalajoki by car, bus, train or airplane.
GETTING TO KALAJOKI
The Hiekkasärkät holiday area is located approx. 7 km south from the center of Kalajoki, by the national road 8. To access the tourist area, take the Hiekkasärkät E or Hiekkasärkät P exit.
Finland and Kalajoki are connected to the rest of Europe through maritime routes, making it easily accessible by caravan, for instance!
From Sweden to Finland:
From Stockholm to Helsinki or Turku: Silja Line, Viking line
From Helsinki and Turku you can continue by car or by train/bus to Kalajoki.
Umeå to Vaasa: Wasaline
Kapellskär to Naantali: FinnLink
From Germany to Helsinki or Turku (for instance Finnlines)
The closest railway stations are located in Ylivieska (40 km) and Kokkola (70 km). From Kokkola, you can continue to Kalajoki by bus.

Most of the intercity buses run through Hiekkasärkät and the affordable Onnibus express bus service stops by the Hiekkasärkät bus stop on national road 8.

Tourism Development Project – Attractive Oulu Region 2020
The Attractive Oulu Region 2020 project is an international tourism development project which aims at making the Oulu tourism region (Oulu, Kalajoki, Syöte, Liminka and Rokua Geopark) the leading destination for educational and professional visits in the Asian market, and strengthen the region’s image as an accessible and versatile tourism region that provides arctic experiences.
The main market areas for the project are Japan and China in Asia, German-speaking Central Europe and neighbouring Sweden, Norway and Russia. In Central Europe and Asia, the project focuses on cooperation with tourism agencies, which means arranging tours in the area, and active participation in B2B events in the target markets, for example.
In the neighbouring market, the project aims at attracting more individual tourists with different consumer marketing actions.
The tourism in the Oulu region is being developed in a broad cooperation network. The main administrator of the project is Humanpolis Ltd (Rokua Geopark) with partial execution from Kalajoki Tourism Association, Travel Marketing Oulu Ltd, BusinessOulu, Syöte Tourism Association and the municipality of Liminka. The project is active from Sep 1, 2018 through Dec 31, 2020. The total budget for the project is 2,7 million euros, funded by The East and North Finland EU office, Humanpolis Ltd, Rokua UNESCO Global Geopark, Kalajoki Tourism Association, the City of Oulu and Business Oulu, Travel Marketing Oulu Ltd, the municipality of Liminka and the Syöte Tourism Association.
The Attractive Oulu Region 2020 project continues the great work of Attractive Oulu Region 2018, which ended on August 31st 2018. The new project aims to ensure the continuation of cooperation for the development of tourism in the Oulu region.
